Last night was a rainy Friday in February and at the Hornby Community Hall families came out to dance to Celtic tunes with June Cannon calling and local foot stompin’ musicians. It was a treat to see all ages dancing together on the dance floor, parents and toddlers, kidlets, and grandparents, too.

And the Band plays on!

June calls a Circle Dance.

And now for a Line Dance, folks!

Gender is no issue here when choosing a partner!

Sadly, this was the last Family Dance of the winter season. What an opportunity this has been for grandparents, parents, and children to come out and dance together.

Despite threats of torrential downpours the sun shone on Hornby’s annual Fall Faire. The fields of Arne’s Farm were abuzz with Bees of all description including bee hive hairdo’s and spelling bees, bee-lieve it or not. Check out the float (above) of the cutest baby bees in town.

The Queen Bee

Methinks this was the 11th annual fall faire on Hornby. Again this year the judges were kept as busy as bees poking and prodding and tasting and touching to declare the winner of the best preserves, garden produce and other culinary delights.

The Judges at work...someone's gotta do it.

adminHornby Happenings, Real Estate
The busy summer season is winding down in the Real Estate world. I am pleased to announce that RE/MAX had a most successful summer of sales. Thank you to all who enlisted the help of our agents!

As expected, I had to put my community happenings on the back burner in order to give my attention to business matters over the past few months.
So let’s rewind the clock to June when Olga Rawlinson once again wowed the local audience with another Recycled Haute Couture. Fashions from the depot and beyond never looked so good. This year Olga lived out a new fantasy by executing a wider variety of dance numbers in the show. It was impressive to see non dancers doing river dance, line dance, African moves and even flamenco! All proceeds went to the new clinic.

adminHornby Happenings, Recipe
The new RE/MAX office on Hornby was launched amid laughter, good food, and wine last week. Realtors, Wendy, James, Margaret, and Frances greeted clients and friends for the late afternoon soiree in their re-newed office which, by the way, looks very sophisticated and alluring with the addition of a small collection of art by Glen Rabena.
Drop by and visit us when you are down at the ferry landing or at the Thatch or the Credit Union.
Here are some of those promised recipes that folks enjoyed during the celebration.
Curried Lentil Dip
1 can lentils (540 ml. drained) or cooked lentils (I use canned for this recipe.)
1 red pepper, finely chopped
2 or 3 green onions, chopped
½ c dried currents
Dressing:
½ cup oil
4 T. vinegar (sushi style is good)
1 T. fresh lemon juice
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
1 tsp. curry powder
1 tsp. cumin
½ tsp. cinnamon
Pinch of cloves
Salt and pepper to taste
Add dressing in the amount wanted. I use about ½ of the dressing for the amount above, or double the recipe and use it all. Make it early in the day for the flavours to meld.
Serve with chips called ‘scoops’ or for fancy put some on endive leaves.
Bacon, Cheddar, and Mushroom Squares
Crust:
1 cup flour
2 tsp. sugar
¼ cup butter
½ cup grated cheddar cheese
Filling:
2 Tbsp. olive oil
3 Tbsp. minced shallots
¾ lb. Fresh mushrooms
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp. finely chopped thyme
Salt and pepper
3 large eggs
¾ cup milk or creamo
6 slices cooked bacon, coarsely chopped
2 cups grated cheddar cheese
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
• Lightly grease an 8 inch square pan
• For crust, stir flour and sugar to combine. Cut in butter with fingers or a pastry cutter until coarse and crumbly. (Dough will appear dry). Stir in cheddar cheese and press into a prepared pan. Bake for 12 minutes and cool to room temp.
• For filling, keep oven at 350 degrees. In a large saucepan sauté shallots and mushrooms in oil over medium heat until liquid evaporates from mushrooms, about 6 minutes, then stir in garlic and thyme and season lightly with salt and pepper. Remove from heat to cool.
• Combine eggs and milk then add grated cheddar.
• Layer cooked crumbled bacon and mushroom mix onto crust.
• Pour milk mixture over all and bake for about 40 minutes or until top is
golden and an inserted knife comes out clean. Cool and cut into squares.

FUND RAISER FOR I.S.L.A. HUGE SUCCESS
The Hat Fashion Show on the weekend of April 17th and 18th was not only a briliant showcase of local Hornby creativity, once again, but a fabulous fund raisor for I.S.L.A. ISLANDERS SECURE LAND ASSOCIATION, a group committed to creating affordable housing for island residents, was fortunate to have artist, Anne Ngan at the helm of this unique event.
Together, island models and artists created a terrifically fun, entertaining, and sophisticated affair.

The Royal Family
Heron Rocks Friendship Society started it all off in mid January when they invited the brave and the brazen to gather in the upper orchard at Heron Rocks to awaken the apple trees and to ensure a bountiful autumn harvest at the second annual Wassail Festival.
Magic was afoot indeed
As druids and fairies,
Pagan beasts and mad hatters
Gathered together in the orchard.

Gather all ye...
Little boys banged on pots
With wooden spoons
In a culinary chorus
To welcome the King

Enter the King
Who was joined by the Queen of the Harvest.

The King and Queen
Round the fire the dancers pranced
As each apple tree was blessed

Round the fire...
And the winter wind blew the evil spirits away.

The Real Druid

The lady in blue and the real druid

What fun!
